The School of the Dante Alighieri Society of Auckland is the largest italian school in the country and runs language classes for adults and children. Adults' classes, from beginners to advanced, run throughout the year, evening and daytime. There are four terms each year and week-long intensive courses during some holidays. Absolute beginners' classes start each term. In addition during the year there are special classes (drama, pronunciation, cooking, literature, etc.), concerts and movies and a variety of Italian social activities. The DA Auckland School for Children runs language courses for children of all ages, including a playgroup for toddlers and school holiday programmes. The Dante Alighieri Society of Auckland (Registered Charity No. CC43454) is a branch of the Dante Alighieri Society headquartered in Rome. Founded in 1889, the society's principal aim is to promote Italian language and culture in the world by reinvigorating the ties that link Italians abroad with their country, and by encouraging a love of things Italian among non-Italians. The Society is named after Italy's most illustrious poet and author of the Divine Comedy.
