Rolly and Gladys Smith built this home in 1946 with Kauri that Rolly collected and milled himself. It was one of the first homes built on the sea side of The Esplanade. The Cholmondeley Smith family have colonized and worked the Coromandel since the late 1800’s. The property was designed to supplement their income as they were farmers and also worked the sea. Harvesting crayfish and catching Marlin was Rolly’s specialty. Since completion of the house many thousands of people have stayed here either as long term lodgers, holiday makers or over night travelers. In the same tradition the family continues to operate as ‘Nana Glad’s Accommodation’ providing lodgings in the uncomplicated style of Nana Glad - simple, homely, comfortable and in the best location in Whitianga.
