Project Island Song is an open wildlife sanctuary on the islands of Ipipiri, in the eastern Bay of Islands. Our aim is to restore the islands to their natural state by bringing the native birdsong back to the islands, note by note. Become a “Friend of Project Island Song”, and you can be part of possibly the best conservation project on the planet. We are proud to say our work has contributed to the removal of all pest mammals from the islands. To protect the islands’ native animal and plant life, we also have biosecurity safeguards in place to stop pest animals getting back to the islands. You can be a very real part of the frontline defence of Project Island Song and its pest-free islands. Just sponsor a rat trap in the mainland buffer zone. There are various ways of getting to Project Island Song. You can bring your own boat or kayak, catch an ExploreNZ or Fullers GreatSights vessel from Paihia or Russell, or charter a local water taxi. Project Island Song is a partnership between the Guardians of the Bay of Islands, a local community group, local Rawhiti hapu (Ngati Kuta and Patukeha) and the Department of Conservation. All partners share the same vision: to see the islands’ ecosystems fully restored.
