Company Overview

A Brief History A Miss Huscott, a Kindergarten teacher in Wairoa was the first to see a need for a convent school. The Sisters of St. Joseph (Brown Jo's) were approached by Fr. Regnault to run the School and Convent. With Fr. Le Petre's help, Sisters Lucian, Emerenita Kelly & Xaveria Bailey started the school & convent with 45 White and 20 Maori pupils. Archbishop Redwood ly blessed and opened the School on Sunday 14th May 1911. In 1958 a new classroom block was built with toilet facilities. In 1964 the Simpson residence was purchased and became the Parish Centre and school library. In 1967 another classroom was built and in 1976, a former hospital building was purchased & turned into a hall. The swimming pool & adventure playground was added in 1975. In 1978, the convent was renovated into a dwelling for the Sisters and now is the Presbytery. On September 15th 1982 St. Joseph's School, Wairoa was integrated into the state school system. Major work was required by the department in the building of 3 new classrooms & a new admin block in the 3 years which followed. More to follow......
