Wellington Shakespeare Society

About & Description

The Wellington Shakespeare Society meets monthly to relish the works of Shakespeare, and members enjoy many Bard-related activities together.

Founded on St Patrick's Day in 1932, the Wellington Shakespeare Society is an institution in Wellington. The Society meets on the first Thursday of each month at 7.30pm in Connolly Hall, Thorndon. At the meetings members read and discuss Shakespeare plays, watch movies, attend performances or listen to talks by theatre professionals. Members are also kept up to date with the latest news concerning Shakespeare productions and Shakespeare-related events in NZ and often go to performances in Wellington together. The Wellington Shakespeare Society was also the instigator of the Globe Hangings Project in 1983, which resulted in the founding of Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand. The two organisations continue to work closely together to this day.
